Years of Service at UVA

I’ve been with the University of Virginia for 11 years now. I started out in Dialysis, then moved to the Cancer Center, and I’m currently with the CAP Program. Altogether, I have 35 years of experience in the medical field, including my time working in Wilmington, NC. My healthcare career actually began back in 1985 in Texas, where I started as an Athletic Trainer. Over the years, I’ve continued to learn and grow, earning certifications in Patient Access and Healthcare Access Management.

Team Spirit and CAP Events

During my time at UVA, I’ve been honored to be named Employee of the Month for the Emily Couric Cancer Center, receive the Phenomenal Award for Women in Healthcare, and several Bee Kind Awards. I always try to lead with a positive attitude and make sure the people I work with have the tools and support they need to do their jobs. I truly believe that happy employees and happy patients go hand in hand. One of my favorite compliments I’ve ever received came from someone who nominated me for an award: “Joycelyn has an amazing positive attitude, which is very important when helping patients and fellow team members navigate their cancer journey.”

Breast Cancer Advocacy

As a 21-year breast cancer survivor, I understand firsthand how important positivity and support are. That’s why I’ve volunteered and served as Chair or Co-Chair for many organizations close to my heart, including Relay for Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Lump to Laughter, Pledge the Pink Breast Cancer Walk, and Pink Heals.

Community Volunteering

I’ve also volunteered with the Texas Special Olympics, Make-A-Wish Foundation of NC, Mason’s Toy Box, the Charlottesville Roller Derby Team as a non-skating official, and the Ronald McDonald House of Charlottesville. Helping others brings me joy, and I take great pride in spreading kindness wherever I can.

Dialysis Years

My early years at UVA were in Dialysis, where I worked closely with patients and learned the importance of compassion, teamwork, and resilience in every aspect of healthcare.

Dedication Through the Storms

Even during challenging times, such as the 2017 snowstorm that affected dialysis operations, I remained committed to ensuring patient care and team safety. Moments like these remind me that compassion and perseverance define healthcare at its core.
