Leadership training
Dare to Lead Program
Dare to Lead™ is the ultimate playbook for developing brave leaders and courageous cultures. This program builds the skills we need to show up with other people, try new behaviors, experience falls and failures, get back up, learn, and try again. Based on the research of Brené Brown, the Dare to Lead™ program is an empirically based, courage-building program based on four skill sets that are teachable, observable, and measurable. This training program, led by Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator Rose Markey, will equip participants with language, tools, and exercises to put these four skills into immediate practice. This program is available to any UVA employee/team member as part of an open enrollment group or intact team.
The Cornerstone Program
In 2014, UVA launched the succession development Cornerstone Program. Cohorts are selected annually and have 30-40 participants. Participants span the entire organization, including the Academic Division, UVA Health, UVA Physicians Group, and other entities, and are identified in advance by their executive leadership.
The program includes:
- An individual learning plan based on a 360 feedback assessment tool and accompanying debrief session;
- Monthly classroom sessions based on leadership theory, tools, and application;
- Exposure to executive leadership;
- Focused individual mentoring;
- Participation on and presentation of a team project.
UVA Health Leadership Institute
The UVA Health Leadership Institute (HLI) — a key pillar of the 2022-32 UVA Health strategic plan initiative of Best Place to Work — is off to an exciting start, hosting its first cohort November 2023-February 2024 and kicking off its second cohort March 2024.
At the Forefront
The institute is the result of significant feedback gathered during the UVA Health strategic planning process and reaffirmed by the 2022 UVA Health team member engagement survey. In pursuit of a strategic plan goal of Cultivating Healthy Communities and belonging for all, the institute’s primary mission is to make UVA Health the best place to work by nurturing leaders from within the organization — a key component for our system’s long-term success.
Volunteer activities
All regular full-time, regular part-time, flex staff, and management medical center employees may receive approval from their supervisor for up to 8 hours of paid Public Service Leave per calendar year. This leave can be used to attend school functions or to perform volunteer work for a school or organizations specified in the policy. Unused leave under this policy will not carry forward to the next year.
